THE DOWNS GAA NOTES Aug 28th 2023
Round 5 SFC Result
On Sunday afternoon The Downs Seniors completed their involvement in this year’s Shay Murtagh Championship with a drawn game against Caulry in Shandonagh. It’s back to the drawing board for the seniors for 2024 having not qualified for the knock-out stages this year. We thank all involved for their efforts throughout the campaign.
Junior Quarter-Final
On Friday evening last the Junior team faced a strong St. Lomans side at home under lights. Unfortunately, The Downs came out second best on this occasion on a score-line of 1-15 to 0-6.
Despite this defeat the Juniors have still qualified for the Clarke’s Bar Junior 1 quarter-final which takes place next Sunday September 3rd at 1.30 p.m. in Moate GAA grounds. We wish Padraig Corcoran and his management team all the best.
Underage Results
The U12 team continued their good run of form in the prestigious Garrycastle tournament away in fantastic facilities in Kiltoom of St. Brigids Roscommon on Thursday evening last. The lads worked extremely hard resulting in a comprehensive win over the Shannon siders. Well done to all.
Cusack Park was a hive of activity on Wednesday evening last with the All county blitz for the U9’s taking centre stage. A wonderful opportunity for all our budding footballers to get a chance to play on the county grounds. Thanks to the county board for organising and indeed to all our players and parents for participating so brilliantly on the night. The future looks bright. Na Dúnta Abú!!
LGFA
The Senior Ladies picked up their fourth consecutive win in the Village Barn Senior Ladies championship on Thursday evening last in Lakepoint Park against St. Lomans. In a game that was nip and tuck the whole way through, The Downs pulled away in the final quarter to take all the points up for grabs on the evening. Final score: The Downs 2-05 St. Lomans 0-6. Round 5 is scheduled for next Thursday at home to Milltown at 6 p.m.
The Senior B side took on St. Mary’s on Friday evening last in Rochfortbridge. In a very close encounter The Downs finished off the stronger with a one-point victory confirming their semi-final spot. Final score: 3-07 to 2-09. Well done to all involved.
The U16’s gave a great account of themselves on Thursday evening at home with a draw game against a strong Milltownpass side. The girls are getting stronger with every game. Well done to all.
The U14’s completed the group stages of their Div 4 championship on Wednesday last with an away win against Kilbeggan Shamrocks. The girls now look forward to the knock-out stages in the coming weeks.
Summer Camp
The Downs GAA & LGFA ran their own Summer Camp this week with over 70 children attending and led by our GPO Jack Casey. The three-day event was a roaring success which wouldn’t have been possible without the wonderful volunteers we have here in our club. Coaches include: Matthew Maguire, Daniel Kenna, Lorcan Mullen, Mikey Walshe, Michael Moloney, Ciara Dolan, Aoibheann Flynn, Lily Reid and Holly Dowdall. Camp finished on Friday with pizza and chips. Well done to all involved from Jack Casey to the coaches to our resident photographer Bernie Conneely who was on hand to record some wonderful snaps of our children.
It was a busy week for Jack Casey (GPO) who also conducted a workshop on Saturday morning for our U13 squad and coaches focusing on a number of key elements of football. We thank Jack for his time and delivering a very informative session for children and coaches alike.

A number of items have been left behind over the past number of weeks in the grounds. If anyone is missing gear, please claim it back at underage training in the next two weeks. Unclaimed items will be donated to the ongoing clothes collection thereafter.
