THE DOWNS GAA NOTES                                         June 3rd 2024

Results Round 9 ACFL

On Tuesday evening the Division 5 team faced off against St. Paul’s Delvin in their final round of the league. The Downs were unfortunately second best on this occasion on a score-line of St. Pauls 2-17 The Downs 0-13.

On Thursday evening last the Division 4 team completed their league with a valuable draw against a tenacious Coralstown/Kinnegad. With very little between the sides throughout the game, a draw was enough to earn The Downs promotion to Division 3 for 2025. They now look forward to a league final against the same opposition Coralstown/Kinnegad. Final score The Downs 0-8 Coralstown/Kinnead 0-8.

On Friday evening the Division 1 side were pipped at the post by Tyrellspass GAA away from home bringing the league to a close for 2024. They now look forward to preparation for the championship in the coming weeks. Final score: The Downs 3-10 Tyrellspass 2-15

Underage Results

The U14 Amber squad made the long trek to Caulry on Wednesday evening last to take on the home side there who were also table toppers. The lads turned in a very strong performance to overcome tough opposition keeping their chances of qualifying for a league final alive. Well done to all

Cusack Park was the venue for the U12 League Finals this week. This new initiative rolled out by the county board was very warmly welcomed by clubs with 17 finals being played over the Bank Holiday weekend. The Downs had the honour of playing the first game and the last game with 37 boys having the opportunity to play in Cusack Park. The amber team opened proceedings with a tough assignment against a strong Killucan side however the lads never gave up and did themselves and their clubs proud particularly in the second half. The black team are taking on St, Lomans in the penultimate game of the finals. Result to follow next week.

U15 Breedon Cup Champions

The Downs U15’s have won the inaugural Breedon Cup played at St Vincent’s GAA in Dublin on a sunny bank holiday Saturday. Group game wins against Glanworth from Cork, Colmcilles from Longford & Killary Gaels from Meath put The Downs into a semi- final v Clonard/Ballinabrackey from which we also emerged victorious. Killary Gaels also made it through to the final after a penalty shoot-out. The final was a close encounter in the first half but The Downs emerged victorious. Great day had by all & huge thanks to Breedon Group for organizing the tournament. Well done to both players and management.
