THE DOWNS GAA NOTES                                         July 29th 2024

Senior Ladies Fixtures

The Senior ladies will open their Village Barn Championship campaign away to Mullingar Shamrocks on Thursday evening August 1st. All support would be greatly appreciated. We wish Martin Murtagh and his management team the very best of luck.

Round 2 Adult Championship Results

The seniors continued their winning ways with a second win in Group B of the championship last Sunday evening in a warm and humid TEG Cusack Park against St. Malachys. In an evenly contested battle, it was The Downs who got scores at vital times to just about but the tie to bed. Two well taken goals by Ian Martin and Oisín Murphy left 6 points between the sides at half-time. A palmed score from Liam Moran in the second half left St. Malachys with just too much to do leaving The Downs with two wins out of two. Final score The Downs 3-12 St. Malachys 1-10. Next up for the seniors is Shandonagh in a fortnights time.

The junior side had to be content with a draw in their second round clash against Coralstown Kinnegad on Sunday morning at home in Breedon Group Molloy Park. They were very unlucky not to take all the points on offer putting in a very good performance. Final score 1-15 to 2-12. The goal from the boot of Dylan Carroll.

U20

The U20’s were away to a strong Tubberclare side on Tuesday evening last in the Division 1 championship. Tubberclare came out on top of this particular fixture in comprehensive fashion. The final game in the preliminary stages is against Kinnegad next week.

Underage Results

The minor boys had a good win this week in round 2 of the championship on a score-line of 3-14 to 3-08 versus Lilliput Gaels. In a highly competitive and enjoyable game, the boys lead throughout but were pushed all the way.

The U16’s also got off to a winning start in the Division 1 championship opener at home to Coralstown Kinnegad on Monday evening in difficult and wet conditions. A hard-working performance in the first half saw us lead by 5 points at half-time. As expected, the opposition lifted their game in the second half but The Downs stuck to their task and held on for their victory on a score-line of 1-14 to 2-06. Next up for this group is St. Lomans on Monday August 15th.

The Division 1 U14’s continued this good vein of results by overcoming Athlone in their first round clash on Wednesday evening last in convincing fashion. A great start for this bunch of players.

And finally, on Friday evening, our U12’s were in action against our neighbours from St. Lomans. Our amber team with a number of our U10 panel put on a very brave performance unfortunately losing out to a stronger side. Our black team also put in a magnificent fighting performance against a very strong St. Lomans team. No doubt that these two teams will meet each other in the future in competitive circumstances. Well done to both teams.

All Ireland Ticket Draw

The draw took place in the Clubhouse on Friday for two All-Ireland tickets. The winner was Paul Quinn from Raharney. Congratulations to Paul. We hope you enjoyed the epic battle between Galway and Armagh. Thanks to all who support the draw.

LGFA Underage Results

Our U8’s and U10’s girls were in action in the latest Go Games blitz in Multy GAA. Opposition was provided by Killucan, Multy, Ballycomoyle and St. Paul’s Delvin. We fielded 2 teams at both age groups with some terrific performances on show. Thanks to Multy for being wonderful hosts as usual.

Our U14’s Division 2 side made it three wins from three in the championship last Thursday evening in a very competitive game against Louhnavalley away. Final score 6-02 to 1-06. Our Division 5 side had their second win in the championship against Tyrellspass at home on Saturday afternoon in a very evenly contested game.
