Round 1 Results

The Division one side opened their league campaign with a win against current county champions St. Lomans in Lakepoint Park last Friday evening. With scores at a premium in the first half, the lads found themselves trailing by the minimum at the interval with both defences working hard. A well taken goal by Kevin Smullen in the second half pushed The Downs in front however it was nip and tuck for the rest of the half. The two sides were level in the late stages of the game but in the final minute Joe Moran kicked the winner to leave the final score at 1-11 to 1-10. The lads continue their league campaign next Saturday away to Caulry.

Sympathy

We extend our condolences to the family of John McLoughlin late of Monilea, Mullingar/Swinford Mayo. John was a former player with The Downs and was a member of the teams that won the Junior Football championship in 1964 and the Senior team that won the championship in 1968. John or Johnny as he was affectionately known as was a proud Mayo and Downs man and remained loyal to both throughout his lifetime. We extend our sincere sympathy to his family relatives and friends.

Everyone at The Downs GAA & Ladies Clubs and the wider community were deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Christy (Kit) Crowley this week. The Crowley name is synonymous with The Downs. We as a club are deeply indebted to the Crowley family for their generosity, particularly in the early years when they made their field available to play our games when we didn’t have a home of our own. This continued for many years and was pivotal in ensuring our survival as a fledgling club. The Crowley families' support of our club continues to this very day.
We express our sincerest condolences to the Crowley family, extended family, relatives, and a wide circle of friends.

Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.

Hard Luck

Commiserations to Coláiste Mhuire who contested the All-Ireland semi-final last Saturday in Padraig Pearse Stadium in Roscommon. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be their day coming up against a very strong St. Colmans Claremorris (Mayo) side. We are immensely proud of our own club players Michael Moloney, Conor Daly, Darragh Smyth, Peter Conneely, Eoin Mullin and Aaron Connaire who represented the club with distinction.
