Sunday April 6th: Division 6 The Downs V Tang (Away) 11.30 am
Round 4 Men’s ACFL Results
On Tuesday last our division 3 side welcomed Bunbrosna to Breedon Molloy park for round 5 of the All county football leagues. On a fine evening for football after a delayed start to the game it was Bunbrosna who started the brighter and scored the opening two points of the game. Shane Carroll opened our account not long after. Jack Carroll pulled The Downs back level in the proceeding minutes but within a matter of minutes Bun struck for the first green flag of the game through midfielder Simon Moorhead and a point from Aidan Finnan saw them move clear on a scoreline of 1-3 to 0-2 on the 15 minute mark. The downs started to find their rhythm with scores from Jack Carroll, Trevor Fitzpatrick & Oisin Loughlin saw us cut the Bunbrosna lead to the minimum. The Downs took the lead not long after when our forwards pounced on a misplaced kick-out from Bun for the ball to find Shane Carroll who made no mistake in finding the net. Bun responded to the goal quickly by hitting 3 points to leave the score at halftime with the downs leading 1-9 to 1-6. The second half turned out to be a cagey affair and scores were hard to come by. Bun started the scoring with a point from their wing forward Gavin Lyon’s and another soon followed from Noel Yourell to close the gap back to one point . Kevin Smullen opened our second half account on 45 minutes and only for some fine goalkeeping from the Bun goalie Shane Carroll was unlucky to not register another goal for The Downs. Both sides traded scores evenly over the proceeding ten minutes with The Downs scores coming from a fine strike from Tadhg Nolan and another from the boot of Jack Carroll leaving the gap at 2 points in the closing stages. It was Bun who were pressing hard to find a score to get something from the game and they had the chance to win the game when they were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute of the game. The Downs number 1 Kevin Maguire was equal to the penalty with a great save after an attempt from the ever dangerous Aidan Finnan. This save ensured The Downs victory in this league clash on a scoreline of The Downs 1-12 Bunbrosna 1-10.Mext up for our Division 3 lads is a trip to Moate in 2 week s time.
The Division 1 side suffered a second defeat in the league with a loss to Shandonagh away from home last Sunday morning. An evenly contested game throughout, it was the home team that held on for the win by the minimum margin. Final score The Downs 0-16 Shandonagh 0-17.
