Round 5 Adult Championship Results 2025.

The Senior men played their final game of the group stages in TEG Cusack Park last Saturday evening against Mullingar Shamrocks. A variety of permutations and possibilities for the senior championship were dependent on results from elsewhere around the county. The Downs were the only team to have secured a semi-final spot before a ball was kicked. The Downs put in a workman like performance to avoid defeat with neither team really taking a hold of the game. The half time score was 0-09 to 0-03 with five points coming from the boot of Dean Egerton (2x 2 pointers). The second half was more of the same. The Downs adding a further 6 points to their tally with Shamrocks adding three points and a Denis Corroon rocket to theirs. It ended The Downs 0-15 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-06. Both teams qualified for the knockout stages evidently. The Downs now take up a semi-final spot in 3 weeks’ time against the winners of a quarter final clash between Garrycastle and Saturday’s opposition Mullingar Shamrocks.

On Friday evening we travelled to our near neighbours Coralstown - Kinnegad for a must win game in Roudn 5 of the JFC. In a calm evening for football under the lights in Kinnegad, it was the hosts who registered the opening score of the game through their corner forward. It was a cagey affair over the opening few minutes until our lads started to click and took over proceedings and by the 15th minute mark we led 0-8 to 0-1. The Downs really had control of this contest and that was further shown when Oisin Loughlin surged through the heart of the Kinnegad defence to finish to the net to leave the halftime score at 1-14 to 0-3.Over the course of the second half both sides traded scores evenly until Kinnegad struck for a goal of their own on the hour mark. On this occasion The downs ran out comfortable winners on a score-line of 1-19 to 1-9 which books the teams place in the quarter final next weekend with date time & opponents yet to be confirmed.

LGFA Results

Both ladies’ teams bowed out of their relevant competitions this weekend. First up were the Junior B side who were narrowly defeated by St. Lomans. It was great to see so many of our younger players get a taste of adult football this year however this defeat brings the curtain down on the Junior B side for this year. The Senior Ladies Semi-final took place in Ballycarrigy early on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, the ladies came up against a focused and stronger Milltown side who were in a defiant mood. The defeat was emphatic with the score reading The Downs 2-13 to 0-03 at the final whistle. We commiserate with Martin Murtagh and his management team on their exit of both competitions. Their efforts are much appreciated by the club. It was a first for the club to have 2 teams competing in the championship so well done to all.

Pat Walsh Memorial Tournament

The sun returned for our annual "Festival of Football" in memory of our former club player and chairman, Pat Walsh. We were honoured to have St.Pauls, Killucan & Mullingar Shamrocks join us along with Kilmacud Crokes, Ratoath, Clonbroney & Carbury from outside the county. After a titanic battle to conclude Group A, Mullingar Shamrocks edged Kilmacud Crokes to top the group. In Group B, it was between Carbury and Ratoath to decide who would top the table with Carbury winning the head-to-head. With all 8 teams in a final, it was all to play for with amazing skill, attack, tackling and determination on display across all 4 pitches. After another excellent display from Shamrocks, they earned top honours against Carbury in the Pat Walsh final. In the Downs 125, it was Ratoath who edged out Kilmacud Crokes in a very tight contest. The Downs secured the Shield playing against St.Pauls with Clonbroney claiming the Plate against Killucan. A huge thanks to Paddy Walsh who represented the Walsh family today and to organisers Paddy Kenny, Oisin Kenny, Sean Carroll and Michael Maloney. A special mention to our excellent young whistlers: Conor Cleary, Eoghan Daly, Aaron Connaire & Billy Carroll for helping to referee our Festival of Football - each did a brilliant job. Also a massive thanks to all parents & siblings who contributed sandwiches & goodies, served up tea\coffee and also helped to clean-up afterwards. Thanks as always to Laurie D'Arcy & Marie Carroll for helping keep everybody refreshed during the day via the Cuppa Hut.
