ACFL Round 5 Results
On Friday night Our Division 1 side travelled to Athlone for Round 5 of the league.
In wet and windy conditions the hosts started the scoring from a free kick inside the opening couple of minutes. Our lads worked tirelessly throughout. In an evenly contested first half it was a goal from Lorcan Mullen, who pounced on a ball coming off the crossbar to palm home to the net that separated the sides on the halftime whistle to leave The Downs in the lead on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-5.
The Downs started the second half strongly and by the 45th led on a score-line of 1-10 to 0-6 aided by a Trevor Martin 2 pointed free. The final 15 minutes were evenly contested with both sides trading scores throughout. Dan O’ Callaghan scored a brilliant point on the run before Dean Egerton completing our scoring on the night to finish the game on a final score of The Downs 1-12 Athlone 0-9.
On Saturday evening our Division 3 team turned in a rampant display of football when they visited Ballinagore for round 5 of the All County league. Aided by a strong breeze in the first half, our lads dominated proceedings. A hat-trick of two pointers from Ben Harte and goals from the boot of Tadhg Nolan and one from Adam Conneely helped the lads to a 2-10 to 5 point lead at the half time interval.
To their credit The Downs lads controlled the second half brilliantly against the strong breeze. Some brilliant defensive work along with an excellently executed 2 pointed free from goalkeeper Senan O’ Driscoll aswell as a great team goal orchestrated by Josh Murtagh and finished by Cian McCourt ensured there was no coming back for the Ballinagore men on this occasion. Balliangore did raise a green flag of their own in the final few minutes of the game but on this occasion it was The downs who ran out winners on a scoreline of The downs 3-16 Ballinagore 1-11.
LGFA Féile
We had a great showing at the U15 girls Division 1 Féile last Monday in Garrycastle. The panel made a fine effort to reach the Divion 1 semi-final only to be beaten narrowly by Mullingar Shamrocks who went on to be the eventual winners overcoming St. Lomans in the final on Tuesday evening. We had excellent wins against Goldsmiths, Cill Óige and Garrycastle topping the group only to be pipped at the post by a strong Shamrocks contingent. We were immensely proud of the effort the girls made. This group have developed incrementally over the years and will be real contenders for their relevant championships this year. Well done to all the organisers and of course Garrycastle GAA on being wonderful hosts.
