On Saturday evening we welcomed Coralstown Kinnegad to a picture perfect Breedon Molloy park for the last round of the league. A game in which a win was needed to give us any chance of making a league final pending other results from other games. Coralstown Kinnegad aided by the breeze started the brightest and opened the scoring. Dan O’ Callaghan scored a brace off points for The Downs either side of a Kinnegad point to leave the score at 2 a piece after fifteen minutes. Both sides traded scores throughout with Trevor Martin finding range from 50 metres out on the 20th minute for an excellently executed two pointer free. For the remainder of a cagey first half where scores were hard to come by Coralstown Kinnegad lead by the minimum at the break on a scoreline of 0-7 to 0-8.
The intensity raised in the second half and like the first half there was very little to split the two sides. The Downs led early in the second with some fine scores throughout with the pick of the bunch a Trevor Martin free from all of 50 metres out but Coralstown Kinnegad led by full forward Shane Fleming scoring some excellent two pointed frees to put the away side in the lead 0-18 to 0-15 the 55th minute. The Downs lads to their credit never wilted and led by goalkeeper Trevor Martin who made a surging run from the goals with the ball after a Coralstown Kinnegad shot dropped short to send a lovely outside of the boot pass to Matthew Cunningham who got there in front of the on rushing defender to then tee up Dean Egerton who made no mistake finishing the ball to the back of the net for the levelling score. Both sides traded two points each before returning substitute Tom Tuite added the winner for The Downs on this occasion. Just before that, Coralstown Kinnegad missed an opportunity to win the game when awarded a two pointer free but on this occasion the ball drifted wide with relief to the black and amber men. Coupled with results elsewhere, The Downs narrowly missed out on a league final spot though all things considered, this year’s league campaign afforded massive opportunities to some of our younger players to gain some valuable experience before championship. Congratulations to Daniel Kenna who made his first senior start for the club yesterday evening.
U12 Boys 5K Challenge
Well done to our u12 lads and their families who completed their 5K challenge last Sunday. The lads have been working on a couch to 5k programme culminating in a 5k run around Breedon Molloy Park today. Great effort from everyone involved.
LGFA U14
Well done to our U14 D1 & D4 teams who both played Mullingar Shamrocks this week in both divisions. Our D4 girls were in the Downs on Tuesday evening and after a very close first half, pulled away in the second half to come away with a decisive win. Thursday was a similar affair, with Shamrocks opening strongly in the first half of the D1 fixture in the Harbour Field. The Downs hit a purple patch in the run into half time and continued strongly into the 2nd half. Shamrocks were never going to give up easily and fought hard to the close coming close to closing the gap. It wouldn't be enough to catch the black and ambers however and the Downs ran out winners in the end. It's all to play for in both these highly competitive leagues at the moment. The girls will play Athlone in D4 this Tuesday evening at 7pm in the Downs.
G4M&O Fundraiser
Our G4M&O held a Family Table Quiz fundraiser on Saturday and as with everything organised by this fantastic bunch of ladies, it was a great night of fun, craic and prizes.
NA Dúnta G4M&O are incredibly grateful to all their sponsors for their generous support and to everyone who came along and made the event such a success.
A huge congratulations to the winning team, The Sideline Scholars , who very kindly donated their prize money back to the team — a wonderful gesture that was greatly appreciated.
Thank you all for your support. It was a brilliant community night, and we couldn't have done it without you!
Killoe Óg U14 Tournament
On Saturday 6th June 12 of our u14 panel made the trip down to Killoe Óg Gaa in Longford to take part in their Packie Joe memorial 7 a side tournament.
In our 1st game we played the host and the lads quickly got down to business coming out on top.Next up was St Vincent's, the lads battled hard and played some great football but were unfortunate to lose out by 2 points. Next up was a strong Shannon Geals team in the shield semi-final and after a great match we lost out again by 2 points. Well done to our panel on the day who can be very proud of their performance. We look forward now to our league final on Wednesday evening.
