We had a night of mixed emotions last Wednesday with both our Div 1 and Div 5 teams contesting league finals. On one hand it was fantastic to have two teams in the finals, a testament to the hard work happening in The Downs, however, the Division 5 team lost out to a strong St. Loman’s contingent whereas the Div 1 team laid down a marker with a commanding win against Lilliput Gaels in their final. Congratulations to all involved. Having two teams in finals at the same age-group bodes well for the future.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies showed great fighting spirit on Sunday morning in the penultimate round of games in this year’s league. After a sluggish start and behind at the break on a score-line of 05 to 1-05, the ladies rallied fantastically to get themselves back on level terms on a score-line of 2-11 to 3-08 against a physically strong Goldsmiths side. Goals coming from the boots of Olivia Glynn and Brittany McNamee. A win in the final round could see the ladies in a league final in the coming weeks so still all to play for.
U14 Girls
Our Division 1 girls were home to Goldsmiths last Tuesday evening while our Division 4 girls travelled to Tang to meet Goldsmiths D4 side. The Division 1 team battled hard against a strong Goldsmiths side but could not seem to capitalise on the scores, finding themselves 8 points down at one point. Credit to these girls they fought their way back into the game and certainly looked like they would come out on top given more time. Unfortunately the final whistle came with the Downs 2 points down. Well done to all on a great battle. The Division 4 girls faced a tough task in Tang, with a fantastic group of u12s playing up in what was a downpour for much of the game. Goldsmiths physicality would prove too much on the day and they came away with a comprehensive win over Na Dúnta. These girls put in a great performance and should be very proud. We look forward to having a full squad back in action for the upcoming Championship.
Congratulations
Many congratulations to Clonkill U15’s that were crowned Div 2 National Féile Hurling Champions last Saturday in Borris - on- Ossory. A fantastic achievement for all involved particularly our own club members: Ben Loughlin, Callum Cleary, James Nea, Sam Doran, TJ Loughlin, Aidan Quinlan, Conor Quinlan, Cónal Murphy and Rían Gilhooley. The management team was made up of two Downs stalwarts also in Séan Loughlin and Steven Cleary. A huge achievement for all involved.
Commiserations
Commiserations to Mark McHugh and Westmeath GAA who bowed out of the All-Ireland series last Sunday in the beautiful sunshine of Clones. What a season we have been treated to as supporters. We can be nothing but proud of everything they have achieved this year. We were expertly represented by Kevin O’ Sullivan, Charlie Drumm, Ian Martin, Jonathan Lynam and Luke Loughlin (both injured). And not forgetting kitman Paddy Walsh.
