SFC and JFC Championship Results
The senior men recorded their second win in the Shay Murtagh Championship in a drenched Moate GAA against Caulry GAA last Sunday evening. The rain was relentless throughout the whole fixture contributing to poor handling on both sides and making scores very hard to come by. Caulry aided by the breeze started the brighter scoring an early goal and added a further seven points to their tally. The Downs managed to be ahead by a solitary point at half time and could have been further ahead only for a good save from the Caulry keeper from an Oisín Murphy shot at goal. Half-time score The Downs 0-11 Caulry 1-07. The conditions were playing havoc but The Downs dealt much better with the inclement weather in the second half piling on the pressure to the Caulry defence and scoring twenty points in total. Caulry managed to add a further three points in the second half to finish on a score-line of The Downs 0-20 Caulry 1-10.
On Friday evening our junior men welcomed St Lomans to Breedon Molloy Park for a top of the table round 4 clash under the lights. The game was a high tempo and hard hitting game throughout and it was The Downs who led at half-time on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-10 aided by an Andrew Cunningham goal & three two pointers from the efficient boot of Jack Carroll.
In the second half, St Lomans came out a different team and put The Downs under severe pressure from the first whistle. Entering the last 10 minutes of play, the sides were level. The Downs lads to their credit never wilted and stuck and their task. Scores from Jack Carroll, Tadhg Nolan, Eoin Mullin and an excellently executed 2 point effort from Matthew Cunningham. This coupled with some excellent defending particularly from the always energetic Daniel Kenna saw The Downs lads run out winners on this occasion on a score-line of 1-18 to 0-19. This result confirms top spot in the group for the junior team with 1 group game to spare.

The U16 girls unfortunately exited the Division 1 championship last Tuesday evening at the quarter final stage. Despite a valiant effort, we lost out by a goal on a score-line of 1-08 to 3-05. This however this marks huge progress for this squad of players who have managed to move their way up through the divisions over the years and acquitted themselves excellently in the Division 1 championship this year. Well done to all involved.
