THE DOWNS GAA NOTES April 17th 2023
Men’s Round 5 League Results
Following a deluge of rain earlier in the week. Molloy Park cleared up nicely for a number of games over the weekend. On Thursday evening last The Downs Division 4 side faced St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge in round 6 of the league. St. Marys come out on top of this particular encounter on a score-line of St. Marys 2-15 The Downs 1-05.
On Saturday evening the Division 1 side took on Moate All Whites also at home. In a very competitive game, The Downs held off a late Moate charge to come out winners on a final score-line of 2-12 to 3-06. Both Downs goals were via the boot of Tom Tuite. Well done to all.
On Sunday morning in Multy GAA grounds the Division 3 side unfortunately lost out to a stronger Multy team on a score-line of 1-15 to 0-10. Hard luck lads.
Easter Camp
The Downs GAA and Ladies Football Clubs hosted their first Easter Football Camp this week and what a success it was. After pushing it out a day due to weather, we were in luck as we had two glorious mornings of sunshine for the camp. Boys and girls from 6 - 12 enjoyed 2 days of football with our brilliant coaches and no-one left empty handed with fabulous goody bags for all attendees and finished off with pictures alongside the Tailteann Cup. A huge thank you to all the organisers and coaches for their time and effort, ably led by Sean Carroll and our GPO Jack Casey.
We look forward to many more similar camps after seeing all the smiling faces at Na Dúnta this week.
Underage Results
U13 Division 1. The Downs played away to Lilliput Gaels. Despite scoring 5-11 the game ended in a draw. At the same time in The Downs, the Division 4 team lost out to a strong St. Lomans side albeit a good performance from The Downs on a score-line of The Downs 2-04 St. Lomans 3-07. It is great to see two teams at U13 level participating so competitively. Well done to all.
The U15’s were also busy this week losing out in the league away to St. Lomans on Wednesday evening followed by the Féile competition on Saturday. The lads played
Mullingar Shamrocks in the opening game of Féile and while they played some nice football, scores proved hard to come by with Shamrocks making better use of their opportunities. The second game was against Lilliput Gaels which proved to be a very competitive game. Both sides were finding it difficult to make a breakthrough ending in a draw which was probably the fairest result. While it was disappointing not to progress to the final, it was great to see a battling spirit from The Downs lads. Mullingar Shamrocks progressed to the final out of the group. Well done to them. Many thanks to all who provided food for all on the day.
Finally, many thanks to Shandonagh GAA who hosted a fantastically run Go Games on Saturday morning with our U7’s, U9s and U11s all participating against hosts Shandonagh with the other opposition being St. Josephs. As usual our players put on a great show of skill with their development visible in all games. Thanks to all players, parents and particularly coaches for their time and effort. Na Dúnta Abú!!
LGFA Results
The U14 girls continued their league participation this week with a home tie versus Shandonagh. It ended honours even in a very competitive game. Final score was The Downs 4-01 Shandonagh 1-10.
Scór na nÓg
The fantastic tradition of Scór continues in The Downs this week. The Downs GAA and LGFA were crowned Leinster Scór na nÓg champions in three categories!!! All roads led to Wexford last Sunday April 16th for The Leinster Final which took place in the National Opera House in Wexford. The Downs travelled with a large contingent of supporters on the day with proceedings kicking off at 3pm.
The Downs were represented by Alanna Corroon who delivered a spectacular rendition of “Mammys Day in Tramore”in the the Aithriseoireacht category. Followed then by a superb and hilarious performance in the Nuachleas category by Aidan Tuite, Aidan Quinlan, Grace O'Neill, Senan O'Neill, Orla O'Connell, Sophie Moore, Darragh Colgan & Sean Corroon. Finally The Downs set dancers tore down the house with Aaron Connaire, Orla Rijksen, Leah Bardon, Billy Carroll, Bailey Shiels, Sean Flynn, Conor Cleary & Ellen Connaire dancing their socks off. Moate were also crowned Leinster champions in the Baléid Grúpa while Bunbrosna were unlucky to miss out in the Ceol Uirlise despite a fantastic performance. All in all, a very successful outing for Westmeath and The Downs in particular!! Congratulations to all our competitors and to all the Scór mentors, coaches and supporters who made it all happen. The Leinster champions now march on to the All-Ireland finals in Killarney. Chomhghairdeas le gach duine!!
