THE DOWNS GAA NOTES 1st May 2023
Men’s Round 7 League Results
On Thursday evening last April 27th the Division 3 team played Maryland in the 7th round of the league. Unfortunately, the lads came out the wrong side of this match-up with a three-point deficit. Final score 1-15 to 0-15 Hard luck to all.
On Friday evening the Division 4 The team faced Shandonagh away in round 7 of the League. In a thrilling encounter, it was Shandonagh who came out victorious on this occasion by a single point. The final score in was Shandonagh 3-15 The Downs 5-08.
The Division 1 team travelled to Castledaly for their 7th round clash. A point ahead at half time, the lads worked hard to win the game with five to spare at the final whistle. Final score The Downs 2-14 Castledaly 2-09.
Underage Results
Our U13’s were busy this week with both teams in action. We are delighted to be able to field 2 teams at this age grade giving all our players plenty of game time. On Wednesday evening our Division 1 team played Garrycastle at home. The lads put in an excellent performance on all fronts and came away convincing winners. On Thursday evening the Division 4 squad travelled to Loughnavalley to face Lilliput Gaels. Despite scoring 2-15 the lads unfortunately were one point short at the final whistle in a very entertaining game of football. Hard luck lads.
On Friday evening the U15’s travelled to Ballinagore to play Lilliput Gaels in what was always going to be a keenly contested match. The Downs got scores at crucial stages in both halves to overcome a gallant Lilliput Gaels side.
LGFA Féile 2023
The Downs was the venue for the U15 Division 2 Féile on Sunday of the Bank Holiday Weekend. The Downs were pitted against Mullingar Shamrocks and Caulry in the group stages. The panel of players turned in two fantastic performances to find themselves group winners qualifying for the semi-finals. The opposite side of the draw left St. Joseph’s in 2nd place following Ballycomoyle in 1st (Milltownpass/Milltown were the other participating clubs) which meant that we faced St. Josephs in the semis. The girls started off very well and went toe to toe with a strong St. Josephs outfit. The girls from Streamstown however went ahead by two points late in the game leaving The Downs chasing the win. Although we had a number of chances, we unfortunately couldn’t catch the opposition despite a massive effort. Hard luck to all who worked tirelessly, it just wasn’t our day!! Congratulations to St. Joseph’s who progressed to the final. We would like to thank all those that helped in any way to make the event a huge success. From Laurie, Marie, Muriel and Aoibhinn in the cuppa hut, to all that provided refreshments to all the parents/mentors/supporters who supported us on the day. The pitches and facilities were once again in top order and special mention to Paul Moore for leading the charge on all fronts. Another proud day for us all here at the club!
LGFA Results
Our U16s were also in action against Kilbeggan away in the League on Thursday evening last. Our girls turned in a terrific performance and earned themselves a good win away from home. Well done to all involved.
Scór na nÓg All Ireland Final
We hosted a wonderful celebration of our Scór na nÓg Leinster champions on Thursday night last April 27th in the clubhouse. We were delighted to see so many community members come out and support these fantastic children and mentors to celebrate their wonderful achievements thus far and to wish them well in the All-Ireland finals in Killarney next weekend May 6th in The INEC Glen Eagle Hotel Killarney. Everyone performed superbly on the night and a great sense of community filtered through the hall as we wished all our competitors well in the All-Ireland.
