THE DOWNS GAA NOTES May 15th 2023
Men’s Round 8 League Results
Last Thursday evening the men’s Division 3 team picked up a good win against Kilbeggan Shamrocks away from home on a score-line of The Downs 0-16 Kilbeggan Shamrocks 0-6. Well done lads
On Sunday morning the Division 1 team took on Mullingar Shamrocks at home. Despite missing some regulars, the lads managed to earn themselves a sixth win in Round 8 of the Division 1 league on a score-line of The Downs 2-12 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-12. Goals coming from the boots of Tom Tuite and Philip Martin.
Also on Sunday morning the Division 4 team were away to Caulry. A highly competitive game ensued between the two sides. Level pegging at half time, The Downs went ahead in the second half only to concede a penalty late in injury time which Caulry duly converted putting the result to rest with Caulry taking all the points on offer. Final score The Downs 1-10 to Caulry 1-12. Hard luck to all
Underage Results
Both U13 teams were in action in Division 4 and Division 1 against Inny Shamrocks and Mullingar Shamrocks respectively. Both teams turned in good performances but unfortunately both suffered narrow defeats. Division 4 Inny Shamrocks 3-12 The Downs 1-15. Division 1 Mullingar Shamrocks 3-11 The Downs 2-09.
The U15’s hosted near neighbours Kinnegad in the U15 league on Monday evening. In a keenly contested first half, The Downs were ahead by 3 points. However, the concession of a penalty in the 2nd half swung momentum to Kinnegad who were triumphant at the final whistle.
The U17’s continued their strong league campaign with a good performance with an away win to Athlone on Monday evening. In a high calibre game, it was only in the final few minutes that The Downs side hit some crucial scores to put the game beyond the reach of a competitive Athlone team. Final score The Downs 3-17 Athlone 2-14.
Our U7’s and U11 boys were in action on Friday evening at home to Tyrellspass in a series of very well contested Go-Games. Rescheduled from the previous week due to the inclement weather, we had the opposite this Friday with some fantastic sunshine to make the evening so enjoyable for parents, mentors and players alike. The park was a hive of activity – wonderful to see. Thanks to Tyrellspass for travelling.
LGFA Results
The U16 girls made a fantastic comeback from 6 points behind at half-time to record an impressive win away to Athlone on Wednesday evening. Final score The Downs 5 18 Athlone 5-14
Our U14’s faced another tough assignment in Loughnavalley on Thursday evening at home. Unfortunately, the opposition were too strong for our girls on the night with Loughnavalley winning well.
The Senior Ladies Division 4 team were in action against Cill Óige at home in the early afternoon of Sunday. The girls were well ahead at half-time but credit to Cill Óige who fought back bravely to leave the final score at The Downs 3-10 Cill Óige 0-9. Well done to all involved.
