THE DOWNS GAA NOTES June 26th 2023
Championship Results
The adult men’s Shay Murtagh football championship resumed this week. The Senior men had a tough opening round fixture on Sunday evening in TEG Cusack Park against last year’s finalists St. Lomans. In an intriguing game that both teams went for it, it was ultimately St. Loman’s ability to score goals at crucial times that earned them all of the points on offer. St. Lomans were ahead by 2 goals 2-06 to 0-6 at half time and despite The Downs clawing their way back into it via goals from Luke Loughlin and Niall Mitchell St. Lomans managed to counteract those scores with goals from TJ Cox and Sam McCartan. The final Score was 4 -12 to 2-12. No doubt these two teams will meet again further down the line in the championship.
On Friday evening the Junior team travelled to Athlone for the first round of the Clarke’s Bar Junior Championship. After a slow start to the game the lads found themselves trailing at half time by 4 points on a score-line of 0-7 v 0-3. Following some great pressure by the forwards Athlone were forced into two handling errors which resulted in goals for Shane Carroll and Billy Moffat. Athlone then bounced back with a major of their own but some fine late points saw The Downs coming away with a well-deserved win. Final score: 2-12 to 1-09.
On Sunday June 25th The Downs GAA hosted two JFC matches. Kilbeggan V St. Paul’s and Moate V Bunbrosna. Thanks to all the volunteers for your continued hard work.
U16 Girls Division 4 League Champions
The Downs u16 girls travelled to Bunbrosna on Thursday evening to take on Clann Gael in the Div 4 League Final. Clann Gael started strong, and Na Dúnta had to fight their way back into the game with a few great goals to finish ahead at half time 3-5 to 1-6. The Downs girls had to keep up their work rate in the second half to hold off a strong Clann Gaels to finish league champions on a scoreline of 4-7 to 2-9. Congratulations to this great team of girls who have worked hard all year and are going from strength to strength. Thanks to all the coaches and to all who came along to support.
