Round 3 Adult Championship Results

The U20’s unfortunately couldn’t get over the line last Tuesday evening at home to Coralstown Kinnegad. Despite a good first half performance, it was Coralstown Kinnead who kicked on in the second half to consolidate the win. Final score 3-11 to 1-09

JFC Playing the first half against a stiff breeze we found ourselves trailing by 6 points at the halftime break. We started the second half brightly with a score from Ben Harte shortly after the restart. We dominated the next 15 minutes of the game bringing it back to 0-7 to 0-5. However, in a 5-minute period of dominance from the Mullingar men, they scored two goals through Donal O’Donoghue & Trevor Keena creating an 8 point gap. Our lads rallied well for the remainder of the half and cut the gap to 3 points but unfortunately that was as good as it got. We were unfortunate with a couple of late goal chances but the Shamrocks defence stood firm to see them take the win on a score-line of The downs 0-10 Mullingar shamrocks 2-7.

SFC The seniors made it three wins from three in Killucan GAA in what was an ideal evening for football against Shandonagh last Saturday evening. Matthew Cunnigham’s 2-03 haul as well as 1-04 from Ian Martin helped The Downs to their third consecutive win in Group B of the championship. The young Downs side were 2-08 to 0-3 ahead at half time continuing their dominance in the second half to leave the final score at 3-13 to 0-10. Mullingar Shamrocks are up next in a fortnight’s time in what promises to be an interesting battle for places in Group B.

Senior Ladies Result

It was end to end action in Breedon Molloy Park on Saturday evening as the ladies took on St Lomans in the 2nd round of the Village Barn Championship. Sheila McGrath opened the scoring for The Downs followed by 2 fine points from Francesca Walsh before Olivia Glynn put the ball in the net for The Downs. Niamh Nolan then converted a free to leave the score 1-4 to 0-2 after 15 minutes. St. Lomans hit 3 unanswered points but Francesca Walsh cancelled out their efforts when she hit the net for another well worked goal. Both sides traded scores until the break with points from Michelle Bohan and a free from Francesca Walsh bringing the half time score to 2-06 to 0-07.The pace didn’t dip in the second half as both teams fought hard for possession. Francesca hit a free after 7 mins to open the 2nd half scoring with substitute Beth Maguire pointing a free. Two Francesca Walsh points and a free from Beth McGuire brought the score to 2-11 to 0-9 at the 3rd quarter mark. Francesca & Beth put over another point a piece before St. Lomans got their 3rd and final score of the half. Final Score Na Dúnta 2-13 St Lomans 0-10.

Underage Results

Our U12 black and amber teams were in action on Friday evening last against Mullingar Shamrocks and Athlone respectively. Both teams battled hard against tough opposition never giving up.

Both U14 teams were in action this week also. The Div 4 team went under to a strong Delvin side at home while the Div 1 team had a very good win against Mullingar Shamrocks in Springfield winning by three points in a fiercely competitive game. Playing into the breeze, the Downs finished the first half with a 2-point deficit after battling hard throughout. The second half was very closely contested in what was a very exciting and entertaining game. The game looked to be slipping away after we conceded a second goal with 6 minutes remaining to go 2 points down. To their immense credit, our boys never gave up and a goal from Aidan Tuite and point from Ben Loughlin left The Downs with a 3-point victory at the final whistle: 1-12 to 2-06. A determined display from our u14s with great performances from every player.

Our U16 boys played their second round of the championship on Monday evening away to St Lomans in ideal conditions. The Downs got off to a good start and a goal midway through the first half from Aaron Connaire left it a 4-point game at half time 1.05 to 0.04.
St Lomans came flying out of the blocks in the second half and had a goal scored within the first few minutes. However, The Downs lads responded well with a goal & three points 10 minutes into the second half. Both teams traded points for the following 10 minutes before another Downs goal from the boot of Finn Brennan. The final score was The Downs 3.13 St Lomans 2.08. Next up is Mullingar Shamrocks in round 3 on Monday 19th August.

Hard luck to the minor boys who lost out narrowly in a highly competitive third round game of the championship on Thursday evening away to St. Lomans on a scoreline of 1-05 to 1-09. In a game of fine margins, the boys should take some consolation from their efforts and performance on the night.

LGFA Underage Results
